Sudden Death and Gradual
Justice
By M J AKBAR | July 24, 2010
It would be odd,
and wholly unacceptable, if secularism were to be defined by the
fate of a gangster in Gujarat. At stake in the Sohrabuddin
Sheikh case is not the religion of the individual, or his
preferred means of sustenance
[in this case,
crime], but
the rule of law. It was in pursuit of this principle that the
Supreme Court handed over investigation of his death in a fake
encounter, and the subsequent murder of Sohrabuddin’s wife
Kauserbi, to the CBI on 13 January 2010. The Gujarat government
effectively lost its credibility when it admitted in December
2006 that Sohrabuddin had been killed in a fake encounter on 26
November 2005 and that his wife had been murdered two days
later.

PM's Paradox : In
Power because he's weak
By M J Akbar | July

Call it the Manmohan Singh paradox: the strength of his
coalition depends largely upon on how weak he is as Prime
Minister. The glue holds because he has no power over his
partners.
The Sunday

exposes the Bhopal tragedy - pics captured by Raghu Rai which
exposes the lies and betrayal denying the impoverished victims
even the most minimum compensation through a cover up in which
the government, the Supreme Court, the bureaucracy and the
police participated. Grab a copy of

"How do you define peace? If peace means an absence of formal
war then India and Pakistan are at peace. But clearly that's an
inadequate definition of peace. We know it in our instincts."

I've
changed my mind about the Soviet Union
Would the Bush-Blair partnership have invaded Iraq with such impunity if
Uncle Stalin or Cousin Brezhnev had been around?
I have been
following your articles with great interest for a very long time. Most
of your articles are thought provoking and written after a great deal
of in depth study.
The Police
are to Blame One
aspect of the “honour” killings of young couples in love that is
rarely acknowledged is the role the police have played in many of the
most heinous incidents. The police should be protecting couples
exercising their democratic rights as young, consenting adults to
cohabit with whomsoever they choose. Instead, in a shocking number of
cases, it is the police who assist these brothers, fathers and uncles
in their hunt for the absconders.
The
Return of Holy Cow!At
what point did in Indian history cow become holy to Hindus? The
question is obviously rhetorical but needs an honest deliberation. The
cow has never been sacred to all Hindus. The view that cow is sacred
is merely a sectional Hindu view.
